Hi, I’m Sasha Gardiner — hospitality business advisor and founder of Vantage Aligned. I spent seven years working inside the New Zealand regulatory system at Marlborough District Council.

I began as an Environmental Health Administrator. The person behind the desk who processed applications, advised businesses on what was required, and guided them through the compliance process from the very start. I then spent five years as both an alcohol licensing inspector and a food verifier.

In that time, I sat across the table from hundreds of hospitality owners. I saw two things, over and over.

I saw talented, passionate people trying to open their dream café, restaurant, or bar, getting completely stuck on the compliance and licensing side. This wasn’t because they weren’t capable, but because the legislation is written in dense legal language nobody has time to decode.

And I saw something else, just as often: owners so busy staying afloat that they couldn’t step back far enough to notice what else was going on in their own business. The time being lost, the small revenue leaks, the easy wins nobody had ever pointed out to them.

The two were always checked separately. Compliance was its own box to tick, growth was someone else’s job entirely.

So I decided to fix both.

What that means for you: I don’t just know the rules. I know how they’re applied, what regulators actually look for when they walk through your door, and where most businesses fall down because I was the person assessing them. And I know what it looks like from the outside when a business is quietly leaving money, time, or opportunity on the table because I saw it constantly, in venue after venue. That wasn’t what I was there to check for. And it wasn’t often that the person checking compliance was also the person who could see what the business was missing.
